As author Pete Prown explains, Thimble Down bucks the trend of gloomy dystopian titles that have flooded the literary market. "It's a vintage mystery-adventure and is more uplifting and enchanting than the current spate of darker kid-lit. Middle-school librarians and English teachers have noted that the book is an excellent vocabulary builder and, furthermore, one that doesn't speak down to young people."
Prown's words are not without substance; recent reviews on Amazon confirm the impact his book is having. Says one reader, "Choose your favorite chair and settle down for a lighthearted, fast-paced tale of thievery and magic in the faraway and long ago village of Thimble Down. This book is part mystery and part fantasy, with a tasty smattering of cooking, gardening, and fishing tips thrown in."

America is fascinated by MURDER
2010-11-28 19:55:50 by -All the cable networks show programs, both fiction and non-fiction, about murder and killing. THe best-seller lists are littered with fictional murder mystery books, serial killer stuff. THE BEST-SELLING "true crime" book of all time, and one of the best-selling non-fiction books of all time, is "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi, which is about... what? a grisly and high-profile series of Hollywood murders.
Why do we like the idea of murder and killing so much?
This is just a question, not a judgment.
Sometimes I have a hard time reading more than
2008-11-15 11:01:46 by Nikki19992 books by the same author. I've read all of Joseph Wambaugh though, and loved them. I've read all the books by James Herriot, Ralph Moody, found his when I was in Jr. High, stole a couple from the school library. I like some of Michael Crichtons, some of Tom Clancys, some Clive Cussler. All of Frank L. Baum. Don't read all novels though, I like Biographies and Autobiographies, a splattering of non fiction.
I miss the 'Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine', use to get that when I was a kid. My mom loved murder mysteries, Rex Stout, etc.... I liked them too. I do need to read more, but I've so much other stuff to do.
