“Helping widows and orphans in poor countries is very uplifting and rewarding. It changes your heart when you spend time around an 8-year-old without parents, siblings or relatives — nowhere to go but the streets.”—
David Woods enjoys routine. Every weekday morning, he gets up before 6 a.m. to do a little exercise, spend 30 minutes with God, and have a hot breakfast with his wife Donna. “The most important part of my day is usually before 8 a.m., ” he says. From there, he heads over to the WCOV studios, and that’s when the adventure starts. “In television it seems that anything can happen with little notice, so ‘routine’ quickly evaporates, ” he says. David is the owner of Woods Communications, which currently owns WCOV-Fox. David’s broadcasting career began during his teenage years when he started working for his father at WTVY-TV. “I learned at an early age that my dad got paid to watch TV, ” he adds. “That appealed to a young boy, so I was very interested from then on.“ After graduating from the University of Alabama, David worked at various stations owned by his father’s company. In 1985, he struck out on his own and rallied investors to purchase WCOV. The next year, the station became a charter affiliate of the Fox network. Now, David does indeed get paid to spend some of his time watching TV. “I look at different shows: new shows, old shows, and pilots, ” he says. “Arsenio Hall has a new talk show for this fall. We recently spent time watching the pilot and studying research and made the decision to buy the show.” But even more of David’s time is spent involved in the advertising aspect of the television business. The station’s primary source of revenue comes through commercials, of course. “It thrills me when we talk to business owners who share how their revenues have grown since they started advertising with WCOV, ” he adds. “Helping other businesses succeed is what we do.” David believes research is a huge key to success in any arena of life. “Facts are my friends. Facts reveal much. I love facts. Without them, leaders lack direction, ” he says. “Whether at home or work, we need clear, accurate data in order to make decisions, create plans, and set goals.” Rather than making quick decisions, David says he seeks information by asking questions, listening, observing, probing, reading, pondering and praying. In his free time, David enjoys relaxing with his family and friends, preferably near a body of water. When it comes to traveling, David opts for a mission trip over an exotic vacation. In fact, he tries to visit a third-world country every year. “Helping widows and orphans in poor countries is very uplifting and rewarding, ” he adds. “It changes your heart when you spend time around an 8-year-old without parents, siblings or relatives — nowhere to go but the streets.” It renews his sense of gratitude and resets his perspective about what matters most in life. For the future of the River Region, he hopes to see a strengthened sense of unity. “Most cultures permeate from the top down. As the leaders of the River Region work together in harmony, so will the people, ” he says. And a final word from David Woods to the readers of River Region Living: “Thank you for watching WCOV.”
